Inspiration behind tantric meditation for couples
When Katrina Bos began her journey into tantra, she noticed that the profound levels of connection and intimacy possible through this practice were often overlooked. “Tantra isn’t really about sex,” Bos explains, “but it is about intimacy—with ourselves, with God, with nature, and with each other.” This realization led her to create a meditation that transcends the physical aspect of relationships and delves into the spiritual and emotional realms.
This meditation is designed to help couples experience that deep connection firsthand. According to Bos, this kind of connection and love is intrinsic to being human, and through this practice, couples can begin to understand the full potential of their relationships.

Step 1: Love your separateness
Start by standing on opposite sides of the room, at least 10 feet apart. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in, filling your body with awareness. Feel your completeness. Allow yourself to recognize that you are a divine being, entirely whole on your own. Place one hand on the center of your chest and the other over your genitals.
For the masculine partner, feel energy from the universe flowing into your heart chakra (where your upper hand rests) and flowing out from your root chakra (where your lower hand is). For the feminine partner, feel the energy flowing into your root chakra and out through your heart chakra. Breathe deeply, allowing this energy to circulate effortlessly.
Feel the balance of giving and receiving—a dance of energies within yourself that prepares you for union with your partner.
Step 2: Observe the other
Gently open your eyes and look across the room at your partner. Notice their beauty, their wholeness, and breathe in gratitude that they are here with you. Allow your attention to naturally gravitate towards them, feeling a part of yourself reaching out.
Now, close your eyes again. In your mind, imagine extending a hand towards them. Can you feel their energy reaching out to you? Take a moment to breathe deeply and connect with this energetic bond between you.
Step 3: Connect physically
Open your eyes and start to slowly walk towards your partner, stopping about a foot apart. Reach out and gently take their hands. Breathe naturally, and allow yourself to be honest and open at this moment.
Honor whatever feelings arise—be it joy, nervousness, or vulnerability. Energy flows most freely in an environment of truth and openness. Trust in the connection you share, allowing your emotions to flow through this union into the divine.
Katrina Bos emphasizes:
“Just totally relax and allow yourself to be light about it. We want to be serious enough to bring all of our attention onto our partner, but not so serious that all of our fears and worries join us.”
By balancing focus and relaxation, you create a space where true connection can flourish.
Step 4: Full union
Now, choose a posture that feels comfortable for both of you. You might sit on chairs facing each other, with your knees touching, or sit cross-legged on the floor. The masculine partner could sit with the feminine partner on their lap in the yab-yum position. You can be clothed or unclothed—what matters most is your comfort.
Close your eyes and allow your breath to become natural and synchronized. Let your separation begin to dissolve with each breath. For the masculine partner, inhale love from your partner’s heart center into your heart and exhale love from your root chakra into theirs. For the feminine partner, inhale from your partner’s root chakra into your root chakra and exhale love from your heart center into theirs.
Allow the energy to flow effortlessly in a circle between you, feeling your individual selves merge into a single, unified being.
Katrina Bos explains:
“We can’t fully unite with another person unless we are complete in ourselves.”
The journey of inner wholeness is crucial to forming a deeper connection with your partner. This meditation encourages you to embrace every aspect of yourself, allowing for a true and profound union with your partner.
Step 5: Concluding the union
Take a deep breath together and silently thank your partner for being with you today. Slowly shift your embrace into a warm, grateful hug, holding each other in silence, filled with gratitude.
When you’re ready, release your embrace and return to your original standing positions. Feel the love and connection between you, even as you stand apart. Gaze at your partner, and with a gentle bow, honor this beautiful soul who shares your life.

Tips for beginners from Katrina Bos
For those new to this type of meditation, Katrina Bos offers some insightful advice. She encourages beginners to “totally relax and allow yourself to be light about it.” Intimacy has often been made taboo, leading to feelings of pressure or fear. However, Katrina suggests that approaching the practice with lightness and attentiveness can help alleviate these concerns. She advises:
“We just have to be light, loving, and fully attentive (connected) to our partner.”
By creating a focused and relaxed environment, beginners can more easily connect with their partner and enjoy the journey of intimacy that this meditation offers.
Take a moment to reflect
After the meditation, take a few moments to reflect on your experience. Journaling can help solidify your insights and track your progress over time. Here are some reflective questions to deepen your practice:
- How did you feel before and after the meditation? Reflect on any changes in your emotional or energetic state.
- What sensations did you notice during the practice? Consider how your body and mind responded to the steps.
- Did you experience any resistance or difficulty? Explore what might have caused these feelings and how you might address them in the future.
- How can you bring the essence of this meditation into your daily life? Think about ways to maintain this connection with your partner beyond the meditation practice.
Reflecting on these questions can help you cultivate a deeper understanding of your practice and your relationship.
